Wednesday at the GUU

Oops, didn’t manage to get round to posting anything on Wednesday night, and it’s been a busy week since then…

The main aspect of Wednesday night at the GUU was the tribute to Jim, who died there last Saturday.

There was a good turn-out and Mairi started the intermediate class with a minute’s silence. Then the routine she taught was in his memory, containing some of his favourite moves.

I’m not sure I can give a detailed account of the moves, but here’s what I can remember…

  • Accordion Cleaver with Legs – start with an accordion, but come out into a cleaver, then bend R leg and move it out to right and back for 4 beats. Lady follows. Step apart, finish R-R.
  • Something into double-handed lady-comb. Sorry, can’t remember what the something was – might just have been a return, go double-handed, then turn.
  • Backwards Drop. From the comb, turn the girl a half turn CW with hands on waist, then catch under her arms for a backwards drop. Back up, and turn her back with R arm on her R arm to reconnect L-R.
  • Man spin to go back to R-R hold.

The freestyle was good, but I was quite tired and didn’t dance as much as I’d normally do.

Afterwards I went for some food with some friends.

As I said on Sunday morning, I didn’t know Jim at all well, but I think he’d have been pleased at the tribute to him. He died doing something he loved. Not many folks manage that.
