Good Tunes at the GUU

My, they played some fine music down at the GUU tonight…

Probably because three of the tracks were supplied by yours truly… :D

Though I admit that Glory Box by Portishead could have gone down better… Quite a few folks started dancing to it, but there seemed to only be two couple left by the end!?! Seems some people just can’t take a challenge!

That was the last track of the night, and although it’s definitely danceable, maybe it isn’t the best for a average Ceroc night…

Anyway, good night’s dancing. Lots of good music, some really nice dances.

Felt I was dancing better tonight that last night – probably because I had had the dancing last night to get me back into the swing of things, but also maybe because I was in a safer place, musically…

Let’s do the moves…

  • arm-jive round-the-world. Still don’t like this, mainly cos I don’t like the arm-jive…

  • octopus pretzel – would better be called basket walk around into pretzel. Tricky bit where you go from a basket position into a pretzel position. This involves turning the girl out clockwise from your basket, and you turning anti-clockwise, almost shoulder to shoulder as you turn away… girl turns all the way round, guy only half way… You’re now in the start of a pretzel – might as well finish it off…

  • first move mambo – nice move. Turn and step towards girl in the turn out part of the first move, doing mambo steps… when appropriate step back out of the way and finish the normal way…

Like the mambo… I’ve had problems with “mambo” moves as they usually have a complex entry. This one is simple enough even for me. I don’t might the “round-the-world”, but can’t be bothered with the arm-jive, and pretzels aren’t a big part of my repertoire, but that I now know a way in without an obscure signal is cool…

Don’t think I’ve got much else to say about the night… It was a good crowd, the GUU is getting busier again, though it probably doesn’t have as many really good dancers as JJ’s normally has. Where in JJ’s you’re spoilt for choice, I didn’t have many “favourite” dancers at the GUU tonight.

Cheers everybody. See you next time!

I’d give Portishead’s Glory Box a go. Certainly if they wanted to play it on the April Fools Party I’d dance to it.

What were the other two tracks?

    Other tunes were….

Funky Cold Medina – think I’ve danced to that in Edinburgh or somewhere… This particular version (ZZ Bros remix) had a bit of “scratching” in it which would have been better not there… The original I think might be a bit too slow though as it’s a song that wants to be danced to fast…

What Can You Do For Me – Utah Saints. The musicality potential for this song is huge. Can hardly begin to do it justice.

I reckon that Glory Box might work better later on in a freestyle with dancers who like something a bit different.

We’ll see if a certain lady DJ reads these comments and agrees… ;)

She’s reading, she’s reading. Sorry I hadn’t read this before last night. I’ve now purchased said Portishead track, although couldn’t have played it last night anyway - sounds like a blues room track to me, but yes, I’d play it.

I have a Funky Cold Medina vs Can’t Get You Out of My Head remix, I really like it and it’s a very danceable 126bpm. Haven’t heard the ZZ Bros remix though and it’s not on iTunes :( and neither is the Utah Saints.
